Fabulous!
Traditional decor. Roving mariachi's. Perfectly presented food, and all of it delicious. We started with the combination appetizer and the crackling beef appetizer, and both were very good. The beef was a favorite. All entrees were great as was the flan. We also enjoyed the tequila with sangrita on the side. We loved it so much we went there twice during the week we visited!

We dined at El Mortero as part of our Krystal stay, and were very happy with our experience. The service was fantastic, and may have had something to do with our early (6PM) reservation. The staff was very attentive, and our waiter hovered near our table the entire time. Going at 6PM on a Tuesday was the right choice for us. When we left, we felt we had been given the royal treatment for our entire 2hrs. Oh, BTW, the food was unreal! We had a great Surf and Turf blend, and it was excellent. I have never had calamari that was as tasty and well prepared as this! It was a huge meal for 2, and it was a very well presented meal.

Excellent food and service!!
We found this restaurant by mistake when looking for another one that was recommended to us. We're glad we did! Service was excellent. We were serenaded by a live mariachi band that was easy to listen to and not overwhelming. All the food was excellent: shrimp ceviche appetizer, chips and salsa verde (mild), mixed grill fajitas for three with chicken, beef, lobster and the best home-made corn tortillas. I had the mango margarita which was excellent. We would definitely visit this restaurant again!

El Mortero should be in the top 10, not relegated to just below Taco City and far below Hooters. Come on, Trip Advisor! The decorative hacienda-like atmosphere and the warm and relaxing ambience complimented so well the the reasonably priced and very well-prepared Mexican food -- and the Mariachi band that serenaded us... WOW! Perfect drinks, attentive but not annoying waiters, it was our favorite restaurant of all that we tried. By far. Chose it for our last night in Cancun and it was just as memorable as the first time we went there.

Great food and margaritas
We stumbled upon this place and ended up having a great time. A few of us tried the more exotic dishes and a couple just had fajitas or tacos. Everything was excellent. It is a little expensive, the service is a little slow and they do charge a service charge; but we never went too long with out being checked on and they made sure we didn't try to tip on top of the service charge. The mariachi band was excellent as well. We very much enjoyed our time there and will go back.

Great dinner and atmosphere
We wanted to have "non all inclusive" Mexican food for our last night and the hotel recommend El Mortero. It is located in the heart of Cancun near the flea market, bars shopping. The atmosphere was very nice. Mariachi Band that sang to all tables, great service and AMAZING food. Kids had surf and turf, my husband and I got the special grill fajitas which featured lobster, steak and shrimp. So good. Aps and dessert were delicious. Tequila and margaritas were strong and good. Good for couples and families. Go, it was fun! Dinner for 4 with drinks, dessert and aps $230.

Old Hacienda Style Restaurant
This restaurant has the best ambiance and good food. It takes two hands to hold the margaritas. The decorations are very typical of an old hacienda with a beautiful fountain and lots of plants in the middle of the restaurant. An extra bonus is that you can enjoy the Mariachis, while you dine.

Food was excellent but really nothing that made me say 'wow'. it's next to all the dance clubs in the cancun tourist areas so if you have small children walking around that area may be inappropriate.I would return for the atmosphere and food.

Old Hacienda Style Restaurant
This restaurant has the best ambiance and good food. It takes two hands to hold the margaritas. The decorations are very typical of an old hacienda with a beautiful fountain and lots of plants in the middle of the restaurant. An extra bonus is that you can enjoy the Mariachis, while you dine.

The service and food were VERY VERY good. The prices weren't bad either. We both had a fish entree and non-meat appetizers (i'm a vegetarian but eat some fish). We shared churros for desert... All were very good. The have a huge selection of tequilas, gynormous margaritas, naturally the roaming mariachi band who are awesome and a lot of fun and great Mexican decor. Decent food but nothing to write home about
We ate here 1 night since it was included in our hotel package. It's obvious they are wanting their guests to have a nice dining experience. The service was spot on and they had a Mariachi band playing and a magician. Nice experience but nothing special. We didn't return simply because of the menu options.

Rene provided less than adequate service. He did not check on us for extremely long periods of time. Glasses were left empty without a chance for refill. Would not recommend.
